Camping Near Platja de Calafell

Calafell's long, broad beach stretches for several kilometres backed by a palm-lined promenade packed with restaurants, ice-cream parlours and watersports operators. Located 25 kilometres north of Camping La Noria, it offers a lively seaside day out with a distinctly different flavour from the quieter beaches closer to the campsite.

Platja Llarga de Calafell
Platja Llarga de Calafell is one of the most popular family beaches on the Penedès coast, and for good reason. The sand is fine and golden, the water is shallow for a considerable distance from shore, and the services are excellent — lifeguards, accessible boardwalks, beach volleyball courts, kayak and paddleboard hire, and a string of chiringuitos and restaurants along the promenade. The promenade (Passeig Marítim) is the social spine of Calafell in summer: families stroll, cyclists cruise past, and restaurant terraces spill onto the pavement with paella, grilled sardines and fideuà on offer. In the evenings, the atmosphere shifts to a relaxed buzz of outdoor dining, occasional live music and children playing in the soft Mediterranean dusk. Beyond the beach, the old town of Calafell perches on a hill behind the coast, crowned by the remains of a medieval castle and the Romanesque church of Santa Creu. The Ciutadella Ibèrica, a reconstructed Iberian settlement dating back to the 6th century BC, offers an engaging archaeological experience for families — children can explore the small stone houses and learn about pre-Roman life on the coast. Calafell is also the starting point for coastal walks north towards Cunit and Cubelles, and the town has a good selection of shops, supermarkets and a weekly market that makes it easy to stock up on supplies while you are there. From Camping La Noria, drive north-east on the C-31 or N-340 for about 25 km (30 minutes). Calafell also has its own Rodalies train station, making it accessible without a car. The combination of beach, promenade, food and archaeology makes it a well-rounded day out for the whole family.

Best Time to Visit

Calafell is at its liveliest from June through September, with full lifeguard service, open watersports operators and a bustling promenade. Weekdays are notably calmer than weekends. The town's festa major in late June includes beach concerts and fireworks. Spring and October are pleasant for walking the promenade and exploring the old town without summer crowds.

Tips

  • Try the fideuà (a Catalan noodle paella) at one of the beachfront restaurants — Calafell is known for excellent seafood.
  • Visit the Ciutadella Ibèrica if your children enjoy hands-on history — it is one of the best-presented archaeological sites on the coast.
  • Park in the streets a few blocks back from the promenade — beachfront parking fills early and is more expensive.
